This is one of my all time favorite board books ever of all time. (Can you tell I really, really like it?) This book conveys just how much parents love their children no matter what kind of mischief their children get into. Grab a box of tissues before you read this one; I tear up every single time.
This is such a sweet, sweet book and might make you a little teary-eyed as you read it to your little ones. The illustrations in this book are wonderful and any parent will be able to identify with the message.

This is a super cute book that shows various animals with their parents and how the parents “carry” their babies from place to place. Little ones will love this book because it has animal babies in it and it rhymes. (You know how much I love rhyming books.) Parents will love this book because it is so sweet, the illustrations are fantastic and the book has a wonderful ending.
Bethany House Publishers recently sent me some books to review here on MommaReads. I was super excited to read them because I was hoping they would be a good stepping stone into “the birds and the bees” talk that is inevitable. What I really like about Jim Burns’ series in that there are different books for different ages. I have God Made Your Body for ages 3-5 and How God Makes Babies for ages 6-9. The first one talks about how everyone is made differently…different hair color, eye color, etc. It also talks about how boys have penises and girls have vaginas and introduces the concept of an egg and sperm and uses the term “making love”. The main message of this book is that each person is unique and special.
The second book talks about everything the first book talks about including safe touching and who should/shouldn’t be allowed to touch our “private parts”. As far as how babies are made, this book discusses how a husband and wife (note: not a man and a woman) make a baby is that the husband puts his penis inside the wife’s vagina. The book also goes on to say that “that might sound icky to you, but that’s okay” and goes on to assure kids that it’s a beautiful thing for married grown-ups.
This book also talks about how babies come out of a mom’s vagina and that babies are a lot of work. It also includes some pictures of cell’s dividing in the early stages of pregnancy and also a sonogram picture.
Both books are very well written.
Have we shared them with our kids yet? No, we haven’t made that leap yet, but I am glad to know that I will have a little help when we are ready.
Hannah is so excited to meet her new baby sister. She has picked out a name for her, made a pillow for her with the baby’s name on it and even decided that her new little baby sister is going to have red hair. Imagine her surprise when she finds out that her new baby sister is actually a new baby brother. All it takes is a trip to the hospital and holding that sweet baby in her arms to help Hannah realize that baby brothers are pretty neat, too.
This is a very sweet and simple book with very little text. The illustrations are warm and inviting. This is a board book…so it’s either great for little ones to chew on or a great way for an adult to talk with little ones about the pictures in the book to help broaden their vocabulary…mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather and baby.
This is a great book to talk about similes and metaphors with kids while also discussing how family members are all different, but very important pieces of a family.
“My dad is as stubborn as a knot in a rope.”
“My mom is as soft as the softest fluff.”
“My brother is as strong as a baseball bat.”
“My baby brother is as sweet as candy.”
Of course, the storyteller has some similes to describe herself….”I am as sparkly as a star.”
Pony does a lot of things just like his dad: he eats a lot, picks out his toothbrush, squeezes out the toothpaste and brushes up and down. He makes sure to brush every single tooth. He also swishes and spits, just like his dad…but sometimes he misses the sink. Oops! This is a great board book to share with your little one.
Such a fun way to discuss the importance of brushing with your little ones. Lions, bears and penguins don’t brush their teeth, but mommies, daddies and kids do.
A little girl loses a mitten to a hedgehog who gets his nose stuck in it so that it looks like he is wearing a hat. The mother hen sees him and laughingly asks him what is on his head. He tells her it’s his beautiful new hat. The gander, the barn cat, the dog, the pig and the horse all laugh at the hedgehog, too, but secretly wish they all had something cool to wear. By the end they all look like a winter fashion show gone terribly wrong. Your kids will love the illustrations, especially the ones on the side of each page that give them a little hint as to what is coming up next in the story. I think this is the first Jan Brett book I ever read and it is probably one of her most famous.
