This is a FANTASTIC book for toddlers and early preschoolers. Not only does it have animals in it, but it talks about different body parts AND invites the children to do the actions along with the animals. For example: I am a monkey and I wave my arms. Can you do it? So much fun!

A sweet book that includes many of the bedtime rituals that your family might go through every night as your little one(s) get ready for bed…one more kiss, one more hug, one more drink, one more snuggle…it is the perfect bedtime book.

This is the perfect cuddly-time-go-to-sleep-book to share with your little one. Not only does the text almost rock your child to sleep, but the illustrator’s soft and whispery illustrations match the mood of the book perfectly.

Mama, Do you Love Me? by Barbara M. Joosse

May 5, 2010 - 10:46 pm No Comments

In this tale, an Inuit girl asks her mother a lot of “what if” questions to see if there is anything she could do that would make her mother stop loving her. What if she threw water on the candle and made it go out…what is she put salmon in her mama’s parka…what if she put an ermine in her mama’s mukluks…what if she dropped the ptarmigan eggs…what if she turned into a mean polar bear with sharp teeth…no matter what she says her mother reassures her that the love she has for her is unconditional. Not only is this a sweet story of the love a mother has for her daughter, the book also has beautiful illustrations.

Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman

This is the story of a poor bird who falls out of his nest right after he hatches. His mother was out looking for worms when he hatched so he doesn’t know what she looks like, but he is determined to find her. He asks a kitten, a dog, a pig, a hen, a cow, a plane, a boat and several other things if they are his mother, but of course they are not. My boys thought it was funny that the bird thought all of these things were his mother-that’s just silly! 🙂 I think the part they loved the most though was that, in the end, the bird is safely reunited with his mother and all is well.

Where’s Spot? by Eric Hill

There was a time in our house when this book was THE book. There are flaps in this book and flap books are huge with the toddler set. HUGE. You have to look under the flaps to find Spot. He is late for dinner and his mom is looking for him. Is he behind the door? Is he inside the clock? Is he in the piano? Children love looking for Spot and finding all of the silly animals along the way.

The Napping House by Audrey and Don Wood

April 27, 2010 - 5:20 am No Comments

This is a very cute tale about a house full of napping people and napping animals and how it all falls apart because of a flea. The illustrations in this book are ideal for a child sitting on a parent’s lap listening to the story. Each page gives the child something new to look at and it’s fun to see where the animals are in each picture and to see what they are doing. Our favorite animal to watch is the mouse.

Mimi’s Toes by Julie Aigner-Clark

Our boys love to read in bed, in the car and on the couch…so why not read in the bathtub, too!!! We read this book a zillion times when the boys were little. There are several Little Einstein bathtub books, but I think this one was their favorite because every time the book said “Mimi” I would say their name instead. What child doesn’t like a book about them? 🙂

It’s been a long time since I have read this book, but I still remember it very well…it has been seared into my brain I have read it so many times. It is a very cute book about animals and the sounds they make, or in some cases, don’t make. To top it all off it has adorable illustrations AND it rhymes.

I Went Walking by Sue Williams

I miss the days of getting to read sweet, sweet stories like this one with a toddler on my lap. This story is great for many ages though because it includes animals, opportunities to learn colors, repetition and simple text. The illustrations are sweet as well and definitely help a beginning reader figure out unknown words as does the repetition. So, instead of reading it with a toddler on my lap, I guess I will just listen with a kindergartner on my lap.
