Bear Stays Up for Christmas by Karma Wilson

December 10, 2010 - 9:40 am No Comments

We love Karma Wilson and we especially love Karma Wilson’s Bear books. Bear has snuggled in for the winter, but his friends really want him to get up for Christmas. His forest friends do finally manage to wake him up so he can participate in the festivities. They go get and decorate a tree and sing songs until all of Bear’s friends fall asleep. While everyone naps, Bear stays up and bakes and wraps so that all of his friends wake up the next morning to some Christmas surprises. All of that celebrating eventually wears Bear out and he heads back to sleep. Super cute story that rhymes and the illustrations are great, too.

Bear Feels Sick by Karma Wilson

I love Karma Wilson and I especially love all of her Bear stories. This one is no exception. Bear is not feeling well, so his friends do everything they can to help him feel better. They get him some herbs, they make some tea, they sing him lullabies…and it works. Bear wakes from his nap feeling great, but then his friends start not feeling well and it’s Bear’s turn to help out his friends.

Don’t You Feel Well, Sam? by Amy Hest

Sam has a cough so his mom runs down the stairs to get him some cough syrup, but the spoon is too big and won’t go in his mouth (or maybe it just tastes yucky). Either way, the promise of snow coming soon coaxes Sam out of bed. He and his mom enjoy some nice warm tea with honey and wait for the snow. I love the illustrations in this book…have your little one look for the mice on each page.

A Bedtime for Bear by Bonny Becker

This is the sweetest story about the friendship between an ornery little mouse and his cranky friend, Bear. Mouse shows up to spend the night at Bear’s house and they have a fun evening, but as it gets closer to bedtime, Bear lets Mouse know that he can’t sleep unless it is absolutely quiet. Well, Mouse has a hard time being absolutely quiet which leads to some cute dialogue and some adorable illustrations. In the end, however, Mouse ends up helping Bear overcome some nighttime fears and they both get a good night’s rest.

Kiss Good Night by Amy Hest

Sam’s mom reads him his favorite book, tucks him in, gets him his stuffed animals, gets him a glass of warm milk, but he’s not ready for bed until he gets a kiss good night. Great bedtime book and so sweet.

Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey

This is a such a sweet and simple story of a mother and her child out picking berries whose trip to the berry patch gets mixed up with a mother bear and her cub also out looking for berries. I think one of my favorite parts of this story is the last picture of the book with the mother and Sal in their kitchen canning all of the blueberries they just picked. If you have gone to the berry patch recently or are going to be heading there soon, this is a must read.

A simple story of a bear and his dad on a trek through the woods…playing in the leaves, eating berries, watching the sun going down. This story is simple and sweet and the illustrations are magnificent.

Grizzly Dad by Joanna Harrison

Dads can get grumpy sometimes and sometimes they are as grumpy as bears. But what would happen if your grumpy dad actually turned into a bear?! I bet he’d give GREAT bear hugs even if he had bad smelly bear breath and I bet he’d make great honey sandwiches. See what other perks come with having a bear for a dad…
