Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Christmas by Joy Cowley

December 6, 2010 - 9:17 pm No Comments

Mrs. Wishy-Washy decides it’s time to wash the animals, but the animals have other ideas…it’s too cold to take a bath. When they protest she decides to go to town, but tells them they need to wash themselves while she’s gone or there will be no presents for them this year. So the animals get the brilliant idea to take a bath in Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s nice warm house. Mrs. Wishy-Washy returns from town and sees the absolute mess they have made, but it’s that time of year, so she forgives them and they all enjoy opening up presents and eating cookies together in Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s warm living room.

How Santa Got His Job by Stephen Krensky

December 4, 2010 - 10:37 pm No Comments

Did you know that Santa hasn’t always been Santa? It’s true. In his younger years he was a chimney sweep, but he lost that job because he always got it done without getting dirty and no one thought he was actually doing his job. Then he tried working for the post office, but that didn’t work out because he thought he could deliver mail to people faster, so he tried doing it in the middle of the night. People didn’t appreciate the late night deliveries, so he lost that job, too. Then he tried working in a diner…lost that job because he was sampling all the sweet treats. Got a job at the zoo, but lost that one because he was favoring the reindeer and the other animals got jealous. He does eventually stumble upon the perfect job and the rest is history.

Christmas Tree Farm by Ann Purmell

From the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve, Grandpa and his family are hard at work in the Christmas Tree Hut helping families pick out the perfect tree, but what many people don’t know is all of the work that goes into the trees all throughout the year. This would be a wonderful book to read to your children, especially if going to a Christmas tree farm is a family tradition in your house.

Mortimer’s Christmas Manger by Karma Wilson

December 3, 2010 - 10:55 pm No Comments

Mortimer comes across a house just his size, but there are a bunch of people statues in it, so he drags them all out to give himself more room. There is even a tiny baby statue laying in a “nest” of straw, so he takes that one out too so that he will have a comfy place to sleep. Mortimer comes back the next night and all of the people are back in the house, so he has to drag them all back out again. He goes back again, just in time to hear the story of Christmas being read and he realizes that the statue people that he has been dragging out of his new-found house were actually people from the Christmas story. Both you and your kids will love this book…it has become a Christmas tradition at our house.
