October 25, 2010 - 9:17 pm No Comments

T.Rex wants to go trick-or-treating with his friends Stegosaurus, Iguanodon and Diplodocus but he can’t decide what to wear that would make him look scary. His friends are already going as a ghost, a witch and a skeleton. His friends have a couple of suggestions but T. Rex decides those aren’t scary enough. Finally, they decide that he’s pretty scary just being himself. Super cute story with adorable illustrations especially if you have a dinosaur fan in your house.

The Night Before Halloween by Natasha Wing

October 23, 2010 - 6:54 pm No Comments

A very cute book with the same rhythm and cadence of the more popular night before Christmas story, but this time the ghosts and goblins are getting ready for Halloween, as are the children and their parents.

Mummies unraveled
and put on new wraps.
Spiders found corners
and spun silky traps.

Meanwhile the children
were tucked snug in their beds,
while visions of candy corn
danced in their heads.

Natasha Wing has several “night before” stories and they are all adorable. This one is no exception.

Ten Trick-or-Treaters by Janet Schulman

October 19, 2010 - 9:28 am No Comments

We have read this book A LOT in our house over the years! It is a cute rhyming story that has your kids counting backwards from ten to one as the ten children in the story trick-or-treat through the neighborhood. One by one, a child leaves the story due to some Halloween mishap which leaves one trick-or-treater sleeping in her bed after a long night of gathering candy.

The Very Best Pumpkin by Mark Kimball Moulton

October 19, 2010 - 9:20 am No Comments

Peter lives on Pumpkin Hollow Farm with his Mimi and Papa. They grow several crops throughout the year, but Peter’s favorites are the pumpkins. One year, Peter ends up tending to a very special pumpkin. He nurtures it and watches it grow and grow. When the farm opens up to the public, that special pumpkin’s vine is so far away from the others that no one picks it. That is until a very special someone comes looking for a very special pumpkin and Peter knows exactly what to do with his pumpkin. Very cute story of giving and friendship and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the illustrations.

Spelling City

I am going to take a break from Halloween books for today because I came across this really cool website that helps kids practice their spelling words. You (or they) type in their spelling list and then the website makes games for them to play on-line using their spelling words. It also makes worksheets that you can print out using the list you typed in. I thought it was pretty cool. It seems there are some options that you have to pay for, but I never ran into a spot where it asked me to pay for anything while I was playing around with it. I just thought this might be a fun and different way to practice spelling words at home or for teachers to practice with their students at school. Go to www.spellingcity.com to check it out.
