George Washington’s Birthday: A Mostly True Tale by Margaret McNamara

February 16, 2012 - 8:07 am No Comments

If you have a little history buff in your house, then they will love this book. It is a fictional account of George’s 7th birthday. His whole family forgets…he has to do his school work and help his dad in the cherry orchard. Oh, but did they forget or is there a surprise waiting for George? Children will like this story because not only is it an engaging fictional story about our nation’s first president, but it also had facts about his life intertwined with the story.

The Night Pirates by Peter Harris

February 15, 2012 - 5:53 pm No Comments

Tom has an adventure one night while he is supposed to be asleep in his bed. Some girl pirates let him join their pirate ship and that night they invade the evil Captain Patch’s camp and sail away with his treasure chest. Tom is a very brave boy, but he is now a very sleepy little boy, too.

How Do You Hug a Porcupine? by Laurie Isop

February 13, 2012 - 2:04 pm No Comments

A very cute rhyming book that talks about all kinds of animals that are easy to hug…bunnies, cats, dogs, even pigs. But how to you hug a porcupine? The boy in the story comes up with all kinds of different ways to protect himself from the prickly porcupine, but in the end, it’s the porcupine who comes up with the best solution. This is a fun every day book and would be a cute Valentine’s Day book as well.

Hedgehug: A Sharp Lesson in Love by Dan Pinto and Benn Sutton

February 8, 2012 - 11:41 am No Comments

Hedgehug has BIG plans for Valentine’s Day. He has made his cards and is ready to show his love to all the critters in the forest. Unfortunately, some of them aren’t as receptive to Hedgehug’s prickly hugs as he had hoped for. His little heart is broken and he’s ready to give up when there’s a tap on his shoulder. Maybe he does have a friend out there. A very cute story of how sometimes things don’t always go the way you expect them to. I also thought I should note, that this adorable little story also uses the word “stupid” in it. If that bothers you, then just change it to “silly” and your little one will never know the difference, or if they do notice you can explain to them why you changed it. Happy reading!

Wherever You Are My Love Will Find You by Nancy Tillman

February 3, 2012 - 5:50 pm No Comments

This would be a great book for a new parent. It’s also a great book to read aloud to your own child. It is a reassuring message that no matter where they are or what they are doing, no matter whether they have been disappointed or misbehaved, that your love for you child is with them wherever they may go. The illustrations in this beautiful book are fantastic as well. This would be a great book to read all cuddled up with your little one on your lap.

Hugless Douglas by David Melling

February 2, 2012 - 11:16 am No Comments

What is cuter than an adorable bear looking for something that’s big, tall and soft to hug? The rock doesn’t work and neither does the tree or the unsuspecting sheep. Luckily, he finds a friendly rabbit who knows just who Douglas is looking for.

Hugs from Pearl by Paul Schmid

An adorable story of a porcupine who loves to give hugs and the problem solving steps she goes through so she can give her classmates hugs without hurting them. Super cute! 🙂

ABCya.com

ABCya is a FANTASTIC website. It says it’s for kindergarten through fifth grade, but there are a lot of very appropriate preschool activities and games as well. All activities/games are educational and most of them focus on pre-reading/reading activities.

Will You Read to Me? by Denys Cazet

January 19, 2012 - 2:40 pm No Comments

Hamlet isn’t quite like all of the other pigs. He likes to read and write poems. He’s really not all that into eating and he doesn’t lay around in the mud. His mom, dad and siblings aren’t quite sure what to do with him.
Hamlet gets pretty discouraged one day when no one will listen to the poems he’s written. He ends up reading them to his reflection in the pond on the farm and it turns out that there a lot of critters who not only like his poetry, but want to hear more. This is a great book about acceptance and doing your own thing because even though not everyone will appreciate you for being you, someone will. I also love the descriptive language in this book and the beautiful illustrations.

Non-Princess Princess Books

A link I saw that lists several books for families who really, really, really don’t like traditional princess books.
