I Love You, Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt

September 21, 2010 - 10:07 pm No Comments

The little boy in this silly, but heart-warming tale, wants to know if his mama would still love him if he was a big scary ape? Of course, she tells him she would still love him and she would take care of him and comb him to make sure he didn’t have any tangles. What is I was a smelly skunK? Yep, she would still love him and sprinkle him with a sweet-smelling powder. What if he was an alligator? Yep. A dinosaur? A swamp creature? A green alien? Yep, yep and yep. The mother lets the little boys know that no matter what, she will love him and take care of him. Very touching book that will also get some giggles. The illustrations are a hoot, too.

My Mommy Hung the Moon: A Love Story by Jaime Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell

September 15, 2010 - 10:34 pm No Comments

I saw this book today at the bookstore and I immediately fell in love with it. First of all, if you know anyone who is expecting or just had a baby, go out and buy them this book. They will cry and when they are done crying they will hug you and thank you. This book celebrates how awesome moms are and all of the many, many talents that moms have and how many things they do for their children every day from sun up to sun down.

My mommy hung the moon.
She tied it with string.
My mommy’s good
at EVERYTHING.

Birdie’s Big-Girl Shoes by Sujean Rim

September 14, 2010 - 2:05 pm No Comments

When I was a little girl, I wanted nothing more than to wear my mom’s high heeled shoes. Birdie feels the exact same way. She imagines how fantastic it will be to do cartwheels while her feet are glittering in mid-air and how grown up she will feel dancing around in high heels. She begs and pleads and her mom lets her wear her high-heeled shoes for just a little bit. Birdie tries doing cartwheels and realizes it is very difficult to land with heels on. Dancing wasn’t so easy either. She finally kicks them off because her feet are starting to hurt and realizes how much she can do barefoot…it’s much more comfortable too. 🙂

The Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman

Do you have a picky eater at home? Well, Mrs. Peters has seven picky eaters. Each one of them will only eat one thing. Peter will only drink milk, Lucy will only drink lemonade, Jack will only eat applesauce, Mac will only eat oatmeal, MaryLou will only eat bread and the twins will only eat eggs. Poor Mrs. Peters spends all of her days making applesauce, bread and lemonade from scratch, making sure there are no lumps in the oatmeal and making sure the twins’ eggs are just right. One night she drags herself up the bed hoping the next day, her birthday, might be different. The children have a surprise for her…

Ivy and Hacket have a very special Mother’s Day breakfast in bed planned for their mom but it does not turn out how they expected AT ALL. With the kitchen a total disaster and then an accidental spill once they get the food to the bedroom-things are not looking good. Ivy and Hacket’s mom comes to the rescue though and tells the kids that what she really wants from them is a sandwich, a hug sandwich.

What Moms Can’t Do by Douglas Wood

May 7, 2010 - 8:26 am 2 Comments

This is a very cute story about all of the things moms can’t do. They can’t let go of a hug without a kiss, they can’t push a grocery cart fast enough, they don’t wear the right clothes or eat the right things for breakfast. The mom in this book is so lucky to have a preschooler who will help her race through the grocery store, pick out her clothes for her and will help her find the “proper” things to eat for breakfast. Not only is this book endearing, but your little one will love the funny illustrations that go along with the story.

Mama, Do you Love Me? by Barbara M. Joosse

May 5, 2010 - 10:46 pm No Comments

In this tale, an Inuit girl asks her mother a lot of “what if” questions to see if there is anything she could do that would make her mother stop loving her. What if she threw water on the candle and made it go out…what is she put salmon in her mama’s parka…what if she put an ermine in her mama’s mukluks…what if she dropped the ptarmigan eggs…what if she turned into a mean polar bear with sharp teeth…no matter what she says her mother reassures her that the love she has for her is unconditional. Not only is this a sweet story of the love a mother has for her daughter, the book also has beautiful illustrations.

Mother, Mother, I Want Another by Maria Polushkin Robbins

Mother mouse is trying to get her son to bed and she kisses him good night. He tells her he wants “another, mother” and she misunderstands and thinks he wants another mother. So she finds some other animal mothers such as a pig and a frog and they kiss him goodnight and sing him a good night song. Poor baby mouse only wants another kiss from his own mother. In the end they get their misunderstanding all straightened out and she, of course, gives him another kiss goodnight. Not only is this a very sweet story that is also funny, but the illustrations are fantastic as well.

Llama Llama Mad at Mama by Anna Dewdney

May 3, 2010 - 10:42 pm No Comments

This is a very cute story of a llama and his mama out for a long day of Saturday shopping. Things start out fine, but when things drag out for too long little llama loses it. The underlying story is one of patience and love and is one that all little llamas and their mamas can all relate to.

Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman

May 3, 2010 - 4:44 am No Comments

This is the story of a poor bird who falls out of his nest right after he hatches. His mother was out looking for worms when he hatched so he doesn’t know what she looks like, but he is determined to find her. He asks a kitten, a dog, a pig, a hen, a cow, a plane, a boat and several other things if they are his mother, but of course they are not. My boys thought it was funny that the bird thought all of these things were his mother-that’s just silly! 🙂 I think the part they loved the most though was that, in the end, the bird is safely reunited with his mother and all is well.
