Night-Night, Little Pookie by Sandra Boynton

November 1, 2010 - 12:05 pm 1 Comment

Sandra Boynton has a knack for writing books that the little ones love and this one is no exception. Little Pookie’s mom is trying to get him to go to bed, but Little Pookie has other ideas. Your little one will enjoy the rhyme of this book as well as helping Little Pookie’s mom find him. Babies and toddlers also love to see how other little people (or in this case a pig) get ready for bed, too…picking out the pajamas, brushing teeth and getting tucked in with a kiss good night.

Tickle, Tickle by Helen Oxenbury

This was another favorite in our house when the boys were little. Babies LOVE to see other babies and even more, they love to see other babies doing the things they do like getting messy and taking a bath. This is a very simple book and sometimes those are the best kind…sweet and simple.

Good Sports by Jack Prelutsky

October 30, 2010 - 9:47 pm No Comments

Prelutsky’s poetry does a great job of capturing the essence of several different sports in this book that is perfect for the preschool and elementary sports enthusiasts in your house. He covers sports like basketball, soccer, football and baseball as well as swimming, frisbee, karate and ice skating to name a few. His poems handle both losing and winning with grace. He also helps kids see that it’s okay to not be good at a sport and even if you’re not good at a sport you can still have fun playing it. These poems are short, fun and have a great rhyme to them.

The Night Before Halloween by Natasha Wing

October 23, 2010 - 6:54 pm No Comments

A very cute book with the same rhythm and cadence of the more popular night before Christmas story, but this time the ghosts and goblins are getting ready for Halloween, as are the children and their parents.

Mummies unraveled
and put on new wraps.
Spiders found corners
and spun silky traps.

Meanwhile the children
were tucked snug in their beds,
while visions of candy corn
danced in their heads.

Natasha Wing has several “night before” stories and they are all adorable. This one is no exception.

Ten Trick-or-Treaters by Janet Schulman

October 19, 2010 - 9:28 am No Comments

We have read this book A LOT in our house over the years! It is a cute rhyming story that has your kids counting backwards from ten to one as the ten children in the story trick-or-treat through the neighborhood. One by one, a child leaves the story due to some Halloween mishap which leaves one trick-or-treater sleeping in her bed after a long night of gathering candy.

Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O’Connell

October 6, 2010 - 9:57 pm No Comments

This book has been read many times at our house. It’s a very cute story about a haunted house with ten ghosts and a witch that’s moving in and wants them out. The witch has all kinds of schemes to get the ghosts to leave and they work too, until one clever little ghost figures out her tricks and gets the others to reclaim “their” house. It has a cute ending, it rhymes and the story counts backwards from 10 to 1. It’s a perfect preschool book.

Who Will I Be? A Halloween Rebus Story by Shirley Nitzel

October 3, 2010 - 9:45 pm No Comments

A girl gets an invitation to a Halloween party and she is trying to use things she has around the house to make a costume. She comes up with a couple of different outfits, but neither one of them seems just right. Finally, thanks to her grandma, she ends up with a costume. I love this story because not only is it a rebus story (a rebus uses pictures to represent some of the words in a story) so it’s a great story for beginning readers, but it also a cumulative tale (which means parts of the story repeat throughout the story) which is also great for beginning readers and it rhymes.

Mrs. McNosh and the Great Big Squash by Sarah Weeks

September 20, 2010 - 11:53 am No Comments

As you might have already guessed, this is a fun rhyming book about Mrs. McNosh’s squash that gets a little out of hand. As soon as she plants the seed in her garden, it starts to grow and quickly becomes so big that she’s not quite sure what to do with it. She does come up with a silly solution though that both her and her dog enjoy. Such a fun book to read aloud. 🙂

My Mommy Hung the Moon: A Love Story by Jaime Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell

September 15, 2010 - 10:34 pm No Comments

I saw this book today at the bookstore and I immediately fell in love with it. First of all, if you know anyone who is expecting or just had a baby, go out and buy them this book. They will cry and when they are done crying they will hug you and thank you. This book celebrates how awesome moms are and all of the many, many talents that moms have and how many things they do for their children every day from sun up to sun down.

My mommy hung the moon.
She tied it with string.
My mommy’s good
at EVERYTHING.

Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen

Love this book! It is the adorable rhyming story of Mr. MaGee and his little dog, Dee, who decide to spend their day at sea. (See, told you it rhymes.) 🙂 While they are at sea they have a run in with a friendly whale. Things don’t go as planned and they have to be rescued by an unlikely group. Super cute!
