Green Wilma Frog in Space by Tedd Arnold

June 20, 2010 - 11:22 pm No Comments

Wilma is minding her own business chasing a fly around the pond for breakfast when she accidentally gets sucked up into an alien spacecraft. The aliens on board think that Wilma is their child but that she must be terribly sick and that’s why she looks so different. Her alien “mother” puts her to bed to get better, but that doesn’t last too long…soon Wilma is up and hopping around. She ends up hopping across the flight controls which sends the ship in a nosedive and straight back to Earth.

Priscilla and the Pink Planet by Nathaniel Hobbie

June 16, 2010 - 12:46 pm 3 Comments

A rhyming romp through the planet of pink…there’s only one problem…EVERYTHING is pink and Priscilla can’t stand it! She goes on a quest to find something somewhere that isn’t pink. She doesn’t end up going where she wants to, but instead of running away from all of the pink she ends up solving the problem of too much pink. I must also mention that if the fabulous rhythm of this book doesn’t capture your child’s attention, then the fantastic illustrations will.

Martian Rock by Carol Diggory Shields

June 14, 2010 - 11:33 pm No Comments

The martians have set off on a journey to explore each of the planets and to find other life forms. They are not having much luck at each of their stops since they started with Pluto, but are pleased once they get to “orb three” to find some very friendly black and white creatures on the south pole with whom they become fast friends. The martians have to eventually leave, but not before giving their new friends a genuine martian rock. (The last two pages of this book are non-fiction and have some very interesting facts about each of the planets.) Not only is this an adorable book, but it rhymes and we all know how I feel about a book with a good rhyme…sign me up! 🙂

Dimity Duck by Jane Yolen and Sebastien Braun

June 12, 2010 - 10:47 pm No Comments

Dimity Duck toddles out of bed, brushes her feathers and is ready to start her day. We follow her as she swims in the pond for her breakfast, as she spends the day playing with her friend Frumity Frog and then as she ends her playtime with Frumity and heads off to bed with a big snore. Such a sweet read and it rhymes…you know I am a sucker for books that have a good rhyme.

Summer Stinks by Marty Kelley

June 9, 2010 - 10:20 pm No Comments

Kids look so forward to the start of summer, but this book is a reminder as to all of the reasons why summer stinks…C is for castles the tide washed away and D is for dog doo I stepped in today. Oh, and there’s more…..M is mosquitoes and millions of bites and N is not sleeping on hot sticky nights. See? School is looking better and better. 🙂 If your child has a sense of humor, they will love this book.

If I Were You: A Daddy-Daughter Story by Richard Hamilton

June 2, 2010 - 10:15 pm No Comments

An adorable story of what might happen IF a little girl and her daddy were to switch roles. Instead of cleaning the house and doing the dishes he would get to watch TV. Instead of eating oatmeal for breakfast she would eat an ice cream sundae. They both think that being the other might have some pretty great benefits, but in the end they decide that it’s best to be “me”. Oh, and it rhymes, I am always a sucker for a cute story that rhymes, too.

Summer by Alice Low

May 31, 2010 - 9:35 pm No Comments

This rhyming book about summer has been around for decades (your parents probably read it to you, too). I love that it rhymes and I adore the pictures. This book also seems to capture how awesome summer is when you are a child. Not only is this a great book to read during the summer, but it’s also a great book to read in the dead of winter when you WISH it was summer.

Summer’s Vacation by Lynn Plourde

It’s summertime, but Summer is ready for a vacation. She wants to go to the beach, go for a hike, pick wildflowers and eat fresh berries. She plays for too long though and doesn’t do her job. Her parents, Mother Earth and Father Time, have to remind her how important her job is and what will happen if she plays for too long.
