How Many Kisses Do You Want Tonight? by Varsha Bajaj

June 27, 2011 - 9:27 am No Comments

This book is perfect for the toddler/preschooler in your life. It has animals, it rhymes and it has counting. Each animal in the book tells their mom or dad a certain number of kisses they need before they can go to sleep. Then a little girl asks for 100 kisses, one for each curl and a boy tells his mom he wants a million kisses. How many kisses do you think your child will ask for?

Who Says Moo? by Ruth Young

Okay, so this isn’t technically a board book, but it is a great book for those little ones who are into animals and animal sounds. It also rhymes and you know how much I love rhyming books.

I Kissed the Baby by Mary Murphy

June 3, 2011 - 11:59 am No Comments

I wish I would have known about this book when my two were little ones. This book is a great interactive book that will give you an excuse to kiss the baby, sing to the baby, tickle the baby and then kiss the baby again. Lots of cuddles and giggles will come from reading this book again and again.

A Child’s Good Morning Book by Margaret Wise Brown

June 2, 2011 - 9:48 pm No Comments

Before I begin, I must tell you that I have never met a Margaret Wise Brown book that I didn’t like and this one is no exception. The way she weaves words together is fantastic, but that may not be why your little one will love this book. The youngest book lovers in your family will love the bright colors and the animals, but I bet they will also love the poetry, the phrasing and the rhyme. Happy reading!

Who Said Moo? by Harriet Ziefert and Simms Taback

If you have a little one that is into animal sounds right now, then this is the book for you. It has flaps, too, and if you have a little one that is into animal sounds, my guess is that they probably love flap books, too. This book is also fun for kids because there is a lot of repetition so they quickly figure out that they can help participate in the story, too. Happy reading!

Babies on the Go by Linda Ashman

May 25, 2011 - 1:12 pm No Comments

This is a super cute book that shows various animals with their parents and how the parents “carry” their babies from place to place. Little ones will love this book because it has animal babies in it and it rhymes. (You know how much I love rhyming books.) Parents will love this book because it is so sweet, the illustrations are fantastic and the book has a wonderful ending.

Matt Christopher Books

April 28, 2011 - 9:24 am No Comments

If you have a child who loves sports then you need to check out Matt Christopher. He has written fiction books on every sport from baseball to skateboarding to ice hockey to soccer. Since this blog is dedicated to younger readers, it is important to note that he has books that are geared more for the 6-8 year old group and then others that are geared more for the 9-12 year old group. The books that are for the younger set are easier to read and have illustrations every few pages. Also, the books for the older kids do cover some topics that may not be appropriate for the younger set, nothing horrible, but maybe things they just aren’t dealing with socially at school yet…things like that.

Just Like You by Jan Fearnley

Little Mouse is a little jealous of the other animals. Daddy Frog can jump really high to bring his little frogs the juiciest bugs and Mama Rabbit can dig deep, deep burrows to keep her babies safe. But what can Mama Mouse do that’s so special? She can do a lot of things, but what she can do best is always love her Little Mouse with all her heart.

And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell

I completely believe in using books to help you talk to your kids about things that maybe you aren’t sure how to discuss. This is the PERFECT book for explaining to your children that families come in all different forms and that, in fact, some families have two dads. I also love this book because it focuses on how the two penguins spent so much time together and how much they clearly loved each other. I also love this book because it’s a true story of two penguins who ended up with a penguin baby to care for and how the workers at the zoo made it happen. I would read this book to your children before they come to you with questions. When they do come to you with questions then you can talk about this book. They then already have a frame of reference with which to understand what they’ve just asked you. It makes the discussion much easier that way.

Whose Teeth Are These? by Joanne Randolph

February 23, 2011 - 1:12 pm No Comments

This is such a fun book! Children use picture clues and riddles to guess whose teeth are in the picture.

“Which orange and black cat has huge, sharp teeth?”

“Which furry, brown animal has teeth that never stop growing?”

This book is written in both English and Spanish.
