The Old Woman Who Named Things by Cynthia Rylant
This is such a sweet book about an elderly woman and her wariness about letting anyone or anything into her life until a sweet little dog shows up at her gate one day. It comes to her gate every day and every day she feeds it and tells it to go home and then one day the dog doesn’t show up nor does it show up the next day. The dog’s sudden absence helps her to realize how much she loves the cute pup and how much she does want him to stick around and not go home. This story has a sweet and happy ending that will warm your heart.

Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester
We LOVE Tacky around here. He is a penguin that marches to the beat of his own drum. He is always messing things up and irritating the other penguins, but in the end, Tacky always seems to come to the rescue. There are several Tacky books; our favorite so far is Tacky and the Winter Games. Your kids will laugh out loud and so will you.

The Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman
Do you have a picky eater at home? Well, Mrs. Peters has seven picky eaters. Each one of them will only eat one thing. Peter will only drink milk, Lucy will only drink lemonade, Jack will only eat applesauce, Mac will only eat oatmeal, MaryLou will only eat bread and the twins will only eat eggs. Poor Mrs. Peters spends all of her days making applesauce, bread and lemonade from scratch, making sure there are no lumps in the oatmeal and making sure the twins’ eggs are just right. One night she drags herself up the bed hoping the next day, her birthday, might be different. The children have a surprise for her…

The Very Noisy Night by Diana Hendry
Does your little one hear noises in the night? Then they will be able to relate to poor Little Mouse who can’t sleep because of the wind, a branch tapping on the window, an owl hooting in the distance and a drippy faucet. If you have a little one like this, then you will be able to appreciate poor Big Mouse who is getting zero sleep trying to reassure Little Mouse that everything is okay. In the end, just like in your own life maybe, after all of that reassuring Little Mouse still ends up in Big Mouse’ bed.

Big Red Lollipop by Rukhsana Khan
Our youngest picked this book out at the library this week because it has a lollipop on the front (he is all about lollipops) and it turns out this is a great book! (Today also happens to be National Lollipop Day!) I love this book because it covers cultural differences…Rubina’s family being new to the United States doesn’t quite understand what’s socially acceptable at a birthday party or even what a birthday party really is. It addresses sibling rivalry which anyone with a sibling can relate to…Rubina’s mom makes her take her little sister with her to a classmate’s birthday party and it is a complete disaster and then her little sister has the audacity to eat her goody bag treats!!! Finally, it addresses the love the siblings have for one another, despite the teasing and fussing…when Rubina’s little sister gets invited to her own birthday party, her little sister has a way of making up for the goody bag incident.

Biscuit by Alyssa Satin Capucilli
This is another favorite easy reader series in our house. The stories are short, sweet and have words that kids who are just learning how to read can figure out. Biscuit is a cute dog who sometimes gets into trouble, but is always endearing. These books are a darling introduction to early reading and are recommended for grades preschool-first grade.
