Nathan Saves Summer by Gerry Renert

June 25, 2012 - 2:51 pm No Comments

Nathan wants to be a lifeguard, but when he dives into their small swimming hole to save a young tiger cub he ends up splashing all of the water out of the pool. Now the animals have nowhere to swim and they have officially declared summer over. But wait! All of that water had to go somewhere! Two penguins find that it’s made a little stream and is flowing into a river which leads to a beautiful lagoon that all of the animals can enjoy. It turns out that Nathan actually saved summer.

The Summer Visitors by Karel Hayes

A family is coming to spend the summer at their cabin which means the bears who have been living there need to pack up and move out in a hurry. As the people move in, the bears move out, but the bears don’t go far…wherever the people are the bears are right around the corner. Occasionally there’s a cake missing or some mysterious footprints, otherwise, the people never catch on that the bears are enjoying their summer right alongside the people in the lake cottage.

This is one of those books that doesn’t have a lot of words, but there are a lot of pictures which much to explore and discuss. Your kids will especially enjoy this book if your family has a lake house or lake cottage. Maybe you have some bears right around the corner, too. 🙂

This is a great book about a boy and his grandfather in the garden and a red hen that keeps following them. This story has a lot of repetition which children love and is great for developing beginning reading skills. It also is a rhyming books which is also great for beginning reading skills. Children will like the ending when they finally find out why that hen was following them. She has a surprise for them…

Jam & Honey by Melita Morales

At first it seems like this is a cute story about a little girl and her mother going out to pick berries so they can make jam. As the girl is picking berries she comes across a bee which she’s a little nervous about. As the story continues though, the tale shifts a bit and the reader sees the bee’s side of the story as well. It turns out he’s a little nervous about the little girl, too.

Ben and his grandma end up having great fun with picnics on the beach, splashing in the ocean water and finding more treasures on the beach after a storm.

How I have made it through parenthood thus far without this book I am not sure. This is the best book EVER for ideas of things to do with the kids while you are out and about…waiting at a restaurant, waiting at the bus stop, car games, waiting room games, doctor’s office games, grocery store games, airplane games…you name it and this book has got it. You should buy this book for yourself and keep it in your purse or in your glove box. It would make a great gift for a new mom, too.

Mama, is it Summer Yet? by Nikki McClure

June 10, 2010 - 1:36 pm No Comments

From the text to the illustrations, this is such a sweet and simple book. I love the repetition, too…enough to engage a little one and get them involved, but not so much that it gets in the way of the story. A child wants to know if it is summer yet. His mom lovingly reassures him that it’s not summer yet, but if you look around you can see that nature is preparing for it and soon you will see signs that summer is here.

Summer Stinks by Marty Kelley

Kids look so forward to the start of summer, but this book is a reminder as to all of the reasons why summer stinks…C is for castles the tide washed away and D is for dog doo I stepped in today. Oh, and there’s more…..M is mosquitoes and millions of bites and N is not sleeping on hot sticky nights. See? School is looking better and better. 🙂 If your child has a sense of humor, they will love this book.

Summer’s Vacation by Lynn Plourde

It’s summertime, but Summer is ready for a vacation. She wants to go to the beach, go for a hike, pick wildflowers and eat fresh berries. She plays for too long though and doesn’t do her job. Her parents, Mother Earth and Father Time, have to remind her how important her job is and what will happen if she plays for too long.
