Duck’s Key, Where Can it Be? by Jez Alborough

September 4, 2010 - 7:13 pm No Comments

Duck has lost the key to his car. He doesn’t know where it is, but there is a mischievous frog that knows exactly where his car key is. In this rhyming lift-the-flap-book, your child will love that they know where the key is, but Duck doesn’t. Duck does eventually find his car keys, of course, but he ends of forgetting something else. Silly Duck. 🙂

A Book of Sleep by Il Sung Na

September 3, 2010 - 10:45 pm No Comments

This book’s illustrations are so beautiful I want to return the copy I got from the library and buy one for myself so I can keep it. The book is about how different animals sleep…some sleep standing up, some sleep by themselves, some sleep with their eyes open, etc., etc. The informative text combined with the cute, whimsical and beautiful illustrations make this book a keeper.

Carl’s Masquerade by Alexandra Day

August 25, 2010 - 10:07 pm No Comments

There are several Carl books and in all of them Carl, the dog, is left with the baby to babysit. These books have very few words and take you on an “adventure” with Carl and the baby while the parents are out. My boys loved these books when they were tots. The illustrations are so full of detail that instead of reading the books you end up talking about the books and pointing out all of the interesting details in the pictures. These are great books for snuggling and talking when you have a little extra time to spend with your little one.

Peek-a-Pet! by Marie Torres Cimarusti

August 23, 2010 - 10:21 pm No Comments

If you have a child who likes to play peek-a-boo and/or who is really into animal sounds, they WILL love this book. Not only does it have flaps, but it has pets playing peek-a-boo, it rhymes and it’s also about animal sounds. This is one of those books that you end up reading so much the flaps fall off. 🙂

Whose Baby am I? by John Butler

August 22, 2010 - 11:22 pm No Comments

This is a beautifully illustrated board book that is perfect for babies and toddlers. When my guys were that age they loved this book and it got read again and again and again. Each page asks “Whose baby am I?” and when your child turns the page they will see the baby animals with its mother. Little ones love baby animals and it’s fun to see how the baby animals look the same or different from their moms. This book features giraffes, seals, pandas, zebras, penguins and more.

From the Garden by Michael Dahl

A great counting book with vibrant illustrations that brings the fun of gardening and counting together in one book. There are also hidden numbers on each of the pages that your little one will enjoy finding as well.

One Big Building by Michael Dahl

August 17, 2010 - 11:57 pm No Comments

I know our boys went through a stage where they loved anything and everything that had to do with digging and building. This book follows two shovels, three dumps trucks, four pile drivers, five concrete mixers, etc., etc., to make one big building. There is a surprise on each page, too. On each page is a hidden number for children to search for. Fun!

Spots: Counting Creatures from Sky to Sea by Carolyn Lesser

August 16, 2010 - 10:17 pm No Comments

It seems that almost every counting book I have read has fantastic vocabulary to go with it and this one is no exception…flapping, looping cruising spots…slinking, prowling, hunting spots…sloshing, wiggling, lurking spots…lots of great words to describe some not so common animals in these beautiful oil and gouache illustrations.

One Nighttime Sea by Deborah Lee Rose

August 15, 2010 - 11:39 pm No Comments

Such a neat book to explore some of the interesting creatures that live in the sea and work on counting all at the same time. This book is great for discussing new words (sea dragons, coral polyps, tide) and it has collage illustrations which are something to discuss with your child as well. How do these pictures look different than typical book illustrations?
