Shiver Me Letters by June Sobel

July 13, 2010 - 7:52 pm No Comments

Okay, one more pirate book… I couldn’t resist this one. Not only is it a cute story of a bunch of shipmates who have to look for all of the letters of the alphabet for their tyrant pirate captain because “R” (get it? arrrr….) isn’t enough for them anymore, it also rhymes…I love those rhyming books!!! I also love it because as you are reading it the kids get to search for the missing letters (which are hidden on each page) along with the pirates.

Daddy’s Little Scout by Janet Bingham

July 13, 2010 - 9:36 am No Comments

Little Fox has gotten too big for the den he lives in with his daddy, so they are on a search for a new place to live. Mrs. Finch and Squirrel live way up in the trees and although it would be neat to live in the trees, foxes don’t live in trees. They discover a mouse’s house, but Little Fox is too big and noisy to live in a little hole like a mouse. The stream where the fish live is too cold and wet for Little Fox, but it is fun to splash in. Mole’s hole is too dark and and rabbit’s hole is too crowded. Little Fox and his daddy dig and dig and dig all afternoon to make a den that is just right for them.

Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey

July 11, 2010 - 11:11 pm No Comments

This is a such a sweet and simple story of a mother and her child out picking berries whose trip to the berry patch gets mixed up with a mother bear and her cub also out looking for berries. I think one of my favorite parts of this story is the last picture of the book with the mother and Sal in their kitchen canning all of the blueberries they just picked. If you have gone to the berry patch recently or are going to be heading there soon, this is a must read.

Imogene’s Antlers by David Small

July 10, 2010 - 7:06 pm No Comments

LOVE this book! Poor Imogene wakes up one morning with antlers on her head-BIG antlers. She makes the most of it though. The only people who seem to be truly disturbed by her antlers is her family. The kitchen maid uses her antlers to dry the towels and the cook uses her antlers to cool the doughnuts and feed the birds. It does turn out to be quite an eventful day, but eventually the sun does go down and it’s time for Imogene to go to bed. The next day she waked up, her antlers are gone and everything is back to normal….or is it? 🙂 Your little ones with love the surprise ending.

Down by the Station by Will Hillenbrand

My boys LOVED this book when they were little! It has a catchy tune and a lot of repetition so the kids can “read” along. There are many versions of this story, but the illustrations in this version make it stand out from the rest.

I Love My Pirate Papa by Laura Leuck

July 3, 2010 - 10:47 pm No Comments

The life of a pirate’s child…you get to walk the plank whenever you want, you learn the letter X from looking at all those treasure maps, you get to use a telescope to look for land, you get to have belching contests and you always get a little sack of gold whenever the other pirates on board find treasure. The best thing about being a pirate’s child, however, is when your pirate papa puts you to bed each night.

Tumble Bumble by Felicia Bond

June 27, 2010 - 8:57 pm No Comments

This cute rhyming romp follows an insect as he goes for a walk. Along the way he meets up with a cat, a crocodile, a bee, a pig, a toad and a mouse. They all end up at a house and meet up with a bear, a spider and a mouse. The tumbly bumbly rhyming cadence of this book will have your child asking for it again and again.

The Animals of Buttercup Farm by Phoebe and Judy Dunn

There was a time in our house when this was THE book that got read before naptime. It takes you on a trip through Farmer John’s farm complete with cows, chickens, farm cats/kittens, horses, goats, rabbits, pigs and ducks. What makes this book are the fantastic pictures that go along with the text. At the end of the book you feel like you just read a scrapbook from someone’s trip to the farm. A fabulous selection for kids who love farms and animals.

I can’t even tell you how many times I have read this book to both of my boys, but the answer is somewhere around A LOT. Little ones LOVE flap books and they also love being able to point to and name their body parts and this book has both!
