Animal Strike at the Zoo! It’s True! by Karma Wilson
This book was a favorite at our house for quite some time a few years back. The animals at the zoo have gone on strike. The giraffes are wearing turtlenecks to cover up their necks, the zebras have painted in their stripes, the tigers have stopped growling…you get the idea. The zookeeper is trying just about anything he can to pacify the animals but the animals still aren’t happy. Things take a turn, however, when the zoo gets a special visitor who is heart broken by the animal strike. The animals quickly realize how important their jobs are and return to their posts ASAP.

What Moms Can’t Do by Douglas Wood
This is a very cute story about all of the things moms can’t do. They can’t let go of a hug without a kiss, they can’t push a grocery cart fast enough, they don’t wear the right clothes or eat the right things for breakfast. The mom in this book is so lucky to have a preschooler who will help her race through the grocery store, pick out her clothes for her and will help her find the “proper” things to eat for breakfast. Not only is this book endearing, but your little one will love the funny illustrations that go along with the story.

Mama, Do you Love Me? by Barbara M. Joosse
In this tale, an Inuit girl asks her mother a lot of “what if” questions to see if there is anything she could do that would make her mother stop loving her. What if she threw water on the candle and made it go out…what is she put salmon in her mama’s parka…what if she put an ermine in her mama’s mukluks…what if she dropped the ptarmigan eggs…what if she turned into a mean polar bear with sharp teeth…no matter what she says her mother reassures her that the love she has for her is unconditional. Not only is this a sweet story of the love a mother has for her daughter, the book also has beautiful illustrations.
Mother, Mother, I Want Another by Maria Polushkin Robbins
Mother mouse is trying to get her son to bed and she kisses him good night. He tells her he wants “another, mother” and she misunderstands and thinks he wants another mother. So she finds some other animal mothers such as a pig and a frog and they kiss him goodnight and sing him a good night song. Poor baby mouse only wants another kiss from his own mother. In the end they get their misunderstanding all straightened out and she, of course, gives him another kiss goodnight. Not only is this a very sweet story that is also funny, but the illustrations are fantastic as well.

Llama Llama Mad at Mama by Anna Dewdney
Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman
This is the story of a poor bird who falls out of his nest right after he hatches. His mother was out looking for worms when he hatched so he doesn’t know what she looks like, but he is determined to find her. He asks a kitten, a dog, a pig, a hen, a cow, a plane, a boat and several other things if they are his mother, but of course they are not. My boys thought it was funny that the bird thought all of these things were his mother-that’s just silly! 🙂 I think the part they loved the most though was that, in the end, the bird is safely reunited with his mother and all is well.

The Great Dog Wash by Shellie Braeuner
This is a new book for us and it is a keeper. It is the cute story of a group of kids who gather to have a dog wash when what shows up but a cat. Mayhem ensues. The kids manage to figure out how to have their dog wash even with the cat present and everyone is clean…for a while. The rhyming in this book makes it a very fun read and the illustrations are adorable.

Where’s Spot? by Eric Hill
There was a time in our house when this book was THE book. There are flaps in this book and flap books are huge with the toddler set. HUGE. You have to look under the flaps to find Spot. He is late for dinner and his mom is looking for him. Is he behind the door? Is he inside the clock? Is he in the piano? Children love looking for Spot and finding all of the silly animals along the way.
