Summer by Alice Low

May 31, 2010 - 9:35 pm No Comments

This rhyming book about summer has been around for decades (your parents probably read it to you, too). I love that it rhymes and I adore the pictures. This book also seems to capture how awesome summer is when you are a child. Not only is this a great book to read during the summer, but it’s also a great book to read in the dead of winter when you WISH it was summer.

Unplugged Play by Bobbi Corner

May 29, 2010 - 11:47 pm No Comments

Another summer book for your family, but not one that you read to them. This is a fantastic reference to have on hand even when it’s not summer. It has great activity ideas for kids from ages 12 months to 10 years. There are ideas for games to play both inside and out as well as craft ideas. There are ideas for playing solo as well as playing with small groups and large groups. There are quiet time activities as well as raucous games for all the kids on the block. There are games that have been played for generations as well as new games. What is great about most of these ideas is that you probably have a lot of the things you’d need already laying around the house. You can check this book out from the library, but you might just want to go ahead and buy it because you won’t want to give it back.

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood

May 23, 2010 - 10:09 pm No Comments

This is a very cute story with even cuter illustrations. Little mouse has picked a red ripe strawberry, but the narrator has convinced the mouse that a big hungry bear is going to come and get it…the bear can smell it no matter where you try to hide it, no matter who is guarding it and no matter how you try to disguise it. There is only one way to get rid of it and the narrator has some pretty good ideas on how to help the mouse out.

Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion

May 22, 2010 - 10:35 pm No Comments

Harry does not like baths but he DOES like to get dirty…super dirty. He is a white dog with black spots, but sometimes he is so dirty he ends up being a black dog with white spots. Well, no matter how dirty he gets his family misses him when he takes off one day to avoid a bath. They are a little curious about the black dog with white spots that shows up in their yard until they give him a bath and find out it is their beloved Harry.

What Do People Do All Day? by Richard Scarry

Oh me, oh my…how many times have I read this book? This was a super huge hit in our house when our boys were toddlers/preschoolers. There are a zillion things to look at on each page and although it is a fiction book, there are some fun things to learn. The book is divided into “chapters” which are also good stopping points so your little one doesn’t talk you into reading the whole book in one night. For example, one chapter shows how Betsy Bear’s letter gets all the way to her grandma’s house, another chapter shows how trees get chopped down and all the ways we use their wood and another chapter shows how new roads are built. I loved Richard Scarry when I was little…his stories are timeless and his illustrations are endearing.

Who Loves Baby Photo Book by Sassy Toys

May 20, 2010 - 11:04 pm No Comments

This was one of our favorite books when the boys were babies. This is not your typical book. This book doesn’t have words, it has pockets in it though. In each pocket you put a picture. We put the boys’ pictures in it (all children love to look at themselves…little self-centered people that they are). We also put pictures of their grandparents in it and pictures of their cousins who live out of state. It was great for talking about their cousins so that when they came into town they were familiar faces even though we only saw them once or twice a year. It’s a great book to stick in the diaper bag or keep in the car. It’s soft and can be chewed on, too. Yes, it’s for our littlest friends.

From Head to Toe by Eric Carle

This is a FANTASTIC book for toddlers and early preschoolers. Not only does it have animals in it, but it talks about different body parts AND invites the children to do the actions along with the animals. For example: I am a monkey and I wave my arms. Can you do it? So much fun!

Sleepyhead by Karma Wilson

A sweet book that includes many of the bedtime rituals that your family might go through every night as your little one(s) get ready for bed…one more kiss, one more hug, one more drink, one more snuggle…it is the perfect bedtime book.

The Lady with the Alligator Purse by Nadine Bernard Westcott

This is a book, but you can’t read it, you have to sing it. Well, you don’t have to, but you will. This is one of those tunes that you may have sang on the playground back in the day while jumping rope or doing a hand clapping game. The best thing about this book though is when you’ve read/sang the book with your child and then you hear them the next day singing the song in the next room. It is catching and it’s a fun one to pass along.
